Obituary: Mr. Adam Esch, an old and respected citizen of White Township, died at his home in that township on Monday, 25 September, aged 71 years and 28 days. The deceased was in Northampton County until his death. He was twice married, his first wife being Julia C. Walters who more his 4 children. After her death he married Miss Hannah Glass, who survives him. He is survived by the following children: George of Indiana County, Joseph and John of Derry, and Miss Susan, at home: Mr Yearick, of Flinton; Mrs. Semple of Hagarty's Cross Roads; Mrs. George Lambert, of Spangler, and Mrs. Krise and Mrs. Warner of Fallen timber. His remains were interred in the Beaver Valley Cemetery of Wednesday of last week.

Know all men by these presents that I Adam Esch of White Township in the County of Cambria and State of Pennsylvania, being in ill health, and of sound and disposing minds and memory, do make and publish this my last will and testament, hereby revoking all former wills by me at any time heretofore made....And as to my worldly estate, and all the property, real personal or mixed of which I shall die seized and possessed, or to which I shall be entitled at the time of my decease, I desire bequeath and dispose thereof in the manner following....

First, My will is that all my just debts and funeral expense, shall be my executor hereinafter mention be paid out of my estate, as soon after my disease as shall be found convenient.

Item- I give and devise and bequeath to my beloved wife, Hannah Esch, all money that may have at the time of my death, and all my household furniture, all my personal property consisting of farming implements, machinery, grain, and all livestock, in fact, all of my personal property that I may have at the time of my death,. And that she is to have a home, or remain in the mansion house in which I may have on the farm on which I now reside, or may reside, as long as she may desire, or live. If she so long remains my widow, And she is to have full and complete control of the farm, as long as she is capable of managing the same, and to have all the products of the farm, and to pay out of the same all taxes and expenses of farming, but not to be responsible to replace any buildings should they be destroyed by fire or otherwise. I also desire that after the death of my wife, Hannah, that all property bequeathed to her, shall be equally divided, as nearly as can be done, between my two youngest sons, John B. and Perry A.

I give devise and bequeath to my son John B. Esch, all my messuage or tenement or tract of land, with the improvements and buildings thereon described as follows. Adjoining lands of Joel Gates Estate, Elia Heemer & Company, and Isaiah Gates, containing about ninety one (91) acres.

I give, devise and bequeath to my son Perry A. Esch, all that messuage or tenement or tract of land, with the improvements thereon, described as follows, adjoining lands of Joel Gates Estate, S.A.Noel, James W. Gallagher Estate, and other containing about one hundred and fourteen (114) acres.

And Also I desire that all the messuage or tenement or tract of land, with the improvements thereon, describe as follows, and adjoining lands of Heirs of Charles Ranstead Esch, land of Martin Nolin, and others containing about forty (40) acres, to be converted to cash, as soon as conveniently may be after my decease, and for that purpose I hereby authorize and empower my Executor, hereinafter named to sell and dispose of the same at public or private sales, or sales, for such price or prices and upon such terms and conditions as to him may seem best, and to grant and convey the same to the purchaser or purchasers, thereof, his,her, or their heirs, and assigns, free from all liabilities for or on account of the appellation of the purchase money, and the net proceeds of said sale of land, after deducting all legal costs shall be divided into eight equal parts and paid over as follows, which is to say,

one eight equal part I give and bequeath to my daughter Sarah Catherine Krise, and one eight equal part I give and bequeath to my daughter Susan M. Esch and one eight equal part I give and bequeath to my son George W. Esch, and one eight equal part I give and bequeath to my Maggie C. Yearick and one eight equal part I give and bequeath to my daughter Ida E. Semple, and one eight equal part I give and bequeath to my daughter Laura J. Lambert, and one eight equal part I give and bequeath to my to my son Joseph I. Esch.

I also desire that the property sold to John F. Glass, and not yet paid for, remain as it is as long as he and his wife live, and at their death, if not paid out them, I authorize and empower my executor to collect the balance then due, and the net proceeds to be divided between by four children name as follows, Maggic C. Yearick, Joseph I Esch, Ida E. Semple, and Laura J. Lambert.

I also desire that if my son John B. die without heir or heirs, before me or his mother, that then the piece of land bequeathed to said John B. shall fall to the said Perry a. & shall be sold and disposed of by the said Executor, hereinafter mention, or named, and that the net proceeds of said sale of land shall be equally divided between my four children as follows, Maggie C. Yearick, Joseph I Esch, Ida E. Semple, and Laura J. Lambert.

I do nominate and appoint my son Joseph I. Esch to the Executor of this my last will and testament.

In witness or testimony whereof I the said Adam Esch have to this, my last will and testament, contained on this single sheet of paper, subscribe my name and affixed my seal this sixth day of July A.D. one thousand eight hundred and ninety-eight.

Signed, Sealed and published and delivered by the said Adam Esch, as and for, his last will and testament, in the presence of us, Who at his request and in his presence, and in the presence of each other, have subscribe our names as witnesses thereto

It is clear from this will that all ten of Adam's children, from both marriages, were treated as equally as possible. We have also been told that Hannah was a good mother to all of the children including the four born to first wife Julia Walters

Adam married Julia Catherine Walters, daughter of George Walters and Catherine, in 1848. (Julia Catherine Walters was born on 11 May 1831 in Fallen Timber, PA and died on 14 Dec 1860 in Beaver Valley, Cambria County, PA.)

Adam next married Hannah Glass, daughter of Joseph Glass and Margaret Troxel, in 1848. (Hannah Glass was born on 6 Mar 1838 in Reade Twp., Cambria Co., PA, died on 28 Mar 1926 in Beaver Valley, Cambria County, PA and was buried in 1926 in Beaver Valley United Methodist Church Cemetery.)
