bullet  General Notes:

In 1851, at age 7, James lived with his mother and siblings in Sorn, Village of Catrine, Ayrshire County, Scotland, on Ford Street. His mother, Isabella, was 46 at this time and his father must have died sometime prior to this.

In 1881, James and family lived in Glasgow at 7 Edgefauld Ter. In 1901 they lived in Glasgow at 34 Crichton St. This researcher can not find further information on the ancestors of James but their is no indication of an Ambrose clan in Scotland. It is thought that the Ambrose line is Italian, possibly from a person coming into Scotland from Italy prior to mid 1800s. The following was provided by Betty Ambrose, a granddaughter of James, from her research into her family line:

"But we are bound to give thanks always to God for you, brethren beloved of the Lord, because God hath from the beginning chosen you to salvation through sanctification of the Spirit and belief of the truth. Whereunto he called you by our gospel, to the obtaining of the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ. Therefore, brethren stand fast, and hold the traditions which ye have been taught, whether by word, or our epistle. Now our Lord Jesus Christ himself, and God, even our Father, which hath loved us, and hath given us everlasting consolation and good hope through grace. Comfort your hearts and establish you in every good word and work. (II Thessalonians 2:13-17)"

"Ambrose was an important Roman governor, studying in preparation for Christian Baptism when he was present at the election of a bishop for Milan. Although he was not yet a Christian, he must have been known for his saintly Character, for the populace acclaimed him and insisted that he must be the new bishop."

"He took the position unwillingly, but became a great Christian leader and teacher. He was no respecter of rank, exercising the discipline of Christ upon emperor and peasant alike. He was outstanding as one of those who kept the Church firmly in the true faith in a time when heresies threatened it. He was a champion of morality as well as of orthodoxy. Most of his teaching is found in his sermons. His preaching and his personality were instrumental in the conversion of Augustine. Great as Saint Ambrose became in the annals of Christendom, and saintly as his character was, even before his conversion, he remains an example of the fact that God does not call men to his work because they are great; he makes the great by his calling. Even the giants of the faith are what they are because they reveal him who came to be their Saviour."
