General Notes:
Robert Rufus Hill was colloquially known as Robert 'Railroad' Hill. He was a lineman for the railroad for much of his life.
He had a child, Robert, by a first marriage to Nanny B. Woody, whom he later divorced, and two more children, Lawrence and Francis, by a second marriage to Mary Ann (Mamie) Lawrence. They raised their children in Thomasville, Alabama (northern Alabama).
In his later years he owned a small farm in New Hope, AL on which he rotated cotton and soybean crops. There was an old farmhouse on the farm site, with a massive stone fireplace running through it and a deep porch across the front. There was a smoke house near the kitchen door, with a tool shed and sizeable 2-story barn behind a carefully kept vegetable garden. Robert Hill always kept mules.
Robert married Mary Ann Lawrence, daughter of Zachary Taylor Lawrence and Mary F. Miller, on 9 Dec 1912 in Cherokee County, Alabama, USA. (Mary Ann Lawrence was born in 1887.)
Marriage Notes:
This marriage was Mamie Lawrence's first marriage and Robert Rufus Hill's second marriage.
