Biographical Note
Charles Almon Dewey was born in Washington, Iowa, on September 11, 18 77 to Almon Ralph and Sarah (Rousseau) Dewey. He attended Oberlin Colle ge in Ohio from 1897 -- 1898, and earned his law degree from the Universi ty of Iowa in 1901. In 1902, he began his legal practice in Washington, Io wa, and was appointed City Attorney. He held this post until 1908, wh en he became the County Attorney for Washington County, Iowa. Dewey marri ed Jessie Irene Laffer of Washington, Iowa, September 1910. One son, Alm on Rousseau Dewey, was born to this marriage. In 1918, Dewey was appoint ed Iowa District Court Judge of the Sixth Judicial District. President Cal vin Coolidge appointed Dewey a United States District Court Judge of the S outhern District of Iowa on January 23, 1928. Dewey requested retirement f rom that office, which was approved by President Harry S. Truman on Mar ch 1, 1949. He died at his home in Des Moines, Iowa, on March 2, 1958 a nd was buried at Washington, Iowa.
