John W. Esch retired from Bethlehem Steel Corporation. His death followed that of his wife's by less than a month. He had done for a throat operation at Jefferson Hospital and died at 6:00a.m. Sunday morning.
For a number of years John was a foremen of the wrecking crew of Gallitzin division of the Pennsylvania Railroad. After the flood of 1889, he took his crew to Johnstown to help rehabilitate the city and it was there he met Mary Haggerty.
In 1920, he went to Johnstown and was made yardmaster of the Cambria Steel Company at the Ten Acre Bridge and January 11, 1902, was promoted to foreman of all motive power of the entire transportation department, a position he held until retiring in 1934
John married Mary Ellen Haggerty, daughter of Haggerty and Ellen, on 21 Dec 1889 in St Columbia' Church Parish, Cambria Co., PA. (Mary Ellen Haggerty was born in May 1869 in Wales and died on 15 Dec 1936 in Johnstown, Cambria Co., PA.). The cause of her death was Pneumonia.
