James was ill for 11 years prior to death. He was a bookkeeper and tax consultant. He retired in 1973 from Shaum Electrical Contractors. He was a former owner of the Vendimatic Vending Machine Business in Argos. He served in the U.S. Navy for six years.

James married Ethel G. Fear, daughter of John Henry Fear and Lesta M. Spencer, on 12 Jan 1957 in Hamburg, PA. (Ethel G. Fear was born on 22 Jul 1931 in Indiana, died on 15 Jun 1999 in Plymouth, Marshall County, IN and was buried on 17 Jun 1999 in I.O.O.F Cemetery, Richland Center, Fulton County, IN.)
