John graduated from Buckley High School in 1947. Immediately after high school, John enlisted in the United States Army and served his country during World War II. After his military service, John returned to Michigan and worked for General Motors for three years, Kenny's Pioneer for 18 years, and Grand Traverse County Road Commission for 18 years as a mechanic. John was a member of the Cornell Church of God for many years.
John married Yvonne Farrington.
