When Coop was a child, his folks left Oklahoma because of his father's health. Mervyn attended school in Sun Shine Valley, New Mexico and completed his education going through the eighth grade at Eagle Center in Baca County. As a young man Mervyn farmed with his dad in Baca County and did shoe repair for his older brother, William F. Cooper in Springfield,Colorado. Mervyn met Alta May Dallas in 1938 and was married in 1940 in Boise City, Oklahoma. As newlyweds they moved to Syracuse, Kansas to open and operate a shoe repair shop. In 1941 the couple moved to Tacoma,Washington where he worked two jobs. He worked in the ship yards working on Navy ships and in a shoe repair shop. While living in Tacoma, their first child Sharon was born. After the war was over, they moved back to Colorado and settled in Lamar. There they had two more children, Toni and Dallas. Mervyn opened Cooper's Western Store and operated it for many years before he took up ranching on a 4,000 acre spread. After his retirement in 1970 he took up bowing, horse shoes, water skiing, arrow head hunting, and once was in a triathlon. Mervyn and Alta have been life long Christians and attended the 7th and Savage Church of Christ.
