This letter was written May 10, 2016 to the last of Howard's children who were not aware of their sister Donna. His other daughter Joyce was aware and has fully accepted her new found sister after all these years:
 Don and Jeanmaire,

You have a half sister born Dec 21, 1941, in Denver, Colorado when I was
stationed at Lowry Field. I did not want to marry her mother, as
she already had two other children, and had other associations.

I would have been hard pressed to provide for all on a private's pay
of $30 a month. Also, there was a problem of getting permission to
 ration separately .

I did progress in rank and married another, was sent to OCS and then
overseas. I kept in touch with Donna's mother and was able to provide
an allotment of funds to a joint bank account for Donna's needs.
Donna's Mom sent me picture of Donna when I was in New Guinea. I
kept it with me and still have it. After seeing the
picture Donna tugged at my heart even more, in the same way all my
 children have.

When I returned to the states my marriage was on the psychological
rocks ( enough said) and Donna's mother married and Donna was
adopted, given a new last name and went overseas with her new military
 family..

I had a new assignment to an army reserve training unit, left Denver
and went to Sheridan, divorced. That was when I met Mom. I told
her about my past, so she knew as much as I did. Over the intervening
many years I have I tried to find Donna but changing her last name
had defeated these attempts. I did not tell all of you because I
didn't have an answer to possible questions..

I now know that Donna knew my name and had tried to find me. She
and her husband Jim had recently used Ancestry.com <http://ancestry.com>'s DNA service. She matched with my cousin Henry Cundy, also a Rice descendent, who
had also used the service. She contacted Henry and Henry sent me
her email address and telephone number

A short time later, Donna and I talked on the phone

 Donna Lauffer is on Facebook.

Donna and Jim visited us last weekend , We had a wonderful time. I can't
express in this medium the absolute Joy of our acceptance of a long
delayed real father daughter relationship. We now have a very expanded
family.. Even though I plan to go on to 103 my life is now complete.

 I love you all, Dad
Howard had a relationship with Jo. Howard next had a relationship with Gertrude Willner, daughter of Isaac David Willner and Zelda (Jennie) Shutinsky. |
