John M. Buchanan

The identity of the parents of John M. Buchanan. According to his son Thomas's obituary (1885), John M. Buchanan's father was John Buchanan, the former Chief Justice of the Maryland Supreme Court. However, according to the entry for Howard Buchanan in Thomas's "History of Allegany County Maryland" (c. 1923), Chief Justice Buchanan was John M. Buchanan's uncle, not his father. John M. Buchanan's father was a Captain William Buchanan who fought under the command of General St. Clair in Ohio in the early 1790s. There is a question as to John M. being the father of Eliza Ellen. All records to date show John M., b 1802, being married to a Sarah and they had no child named Eliza Ellen.

John married Mary S. Grieves on 11 May 1825 in Hagerstown, Washington County, Maryland. (Mary S. Grieves was born about 1805 in Maryland and died on 27 Jan 1841 in Ellerslie, Allegany County, Maryland.)
