bullet  General Notes:

Jeremiah Asa Waugaman came from one of the oldest families in Westmoreland county, his great-grandfather, John Waugaman, having come there in very early times, while the region was still practically uncleared wilderness. He came from east of the mountains and settled in what is now Franklin township, where his death occurred in the year 1822. He and his wife were the parents of seven children. The old homestead descended to Peter Waugaman, who continued to reside on it during the remainder of his natural life of eighty years. He was twice married, his first wife having been Rebecca Walton.

Jeremiah Asa Waugaman was born February 8, 1850, on a farm in Penn township, situated about two and a half miles north of Manor Station. He remained at the parental home until he had reached the age of twenty-one, and then worked in the butcher establishment owned by his brother-in-law, and later became a partner in this business. Here is remained for seven years, and in April, 1879, rented his present farm, as a tenant. For twenty-one years Mr. Waugaman continued here and then bought ninety acres of ground. In 1894 her erected a barn and in 1904 he rebuilt the house. He has dealt largely in milk, selling it to hotels, etc. In 1916 he started a milk route, which was at once successful, due to the fact that Mr. Waugaman's stock of Guernsey cows have given his milk an excellent name. His farm is well watered with excellent springs and, in fact, is a model which is being closely followed by his neighbors. Mr. Waugaman is at present a deputy and has served as town auditor. He is a Democrat in his politics and has always staunchly supported the principles and policies of his part. In his religious affiliations. Mr. Waugaman is identified with the Reformed church and is active in its interests.

He also did considerable building for others, and was a most hard-working man. His widow later married John Waugaman and they resided at Salem Village. It would be difficult to overestimate the value to a community of the presence in it of a man like Mr. Waugaman. There is scarcely a department in its affairs, an aspect of its life, in which his influence is not most potently felt, and felt invariably on the side of the public good. He is a practical man of affairs, a man of the world, yet never in seeking his own advantage does he lose sight of that of the community of which he is a member. Nay, rather does he give the preference to the public interests over his own, and in the many farming enterprises in which he is interested no one ever accused him, even among his neighbors, of having anything but the purest and most altruistic motives. The same high ideals that govern him in these capacities also are his guide in the more personal relations of life, and he is the possessor of those great blessings, a loving family and host of devoted friends.
