He was known as Roy. He attended the North Washington Academy for 2 years. At age 16, he started building oil rigs, and continued this occupation, while working on the farm, driving teams and working at the oil refinery until he was around 27years old. Then he became a tool dresser, worked in a sawmill, mined coal, pumped oil wells, until he finally went to work in the barrel house of the Pendrake Refinery in 1928.
Alvin married Grace Emery, daughter of James Henry Emery and Jane Early, on 12 May 1909 in Petrolia, PA. (Grace Emery was born on 4 Mar 1890, died on 8 Aug 1975 and was buried in Concord Cem, Hooker, PA.)
