My memories of Grandma Emma Leonard were few as she died when I was 17. In the early 1950's, she had fallen and broken her hip. In those days, there was not much you could do for a broken hip so she remained bedfast for nine years until her death in 1960. Her daughters, Flora, Edna and Alma took turns taking care of her at her home. When their turns were exhausted, they hired a woman to look after her, a Mrs. Goncet, from Jeannette.
She was a wiry little woman who, even with a broken hip, could push a rocking chair around her kitchen with her body. Grandma Leonard wore her hair up in a top-not on her head, making her look ever more wiry and contrary.
Emma married Harry David Leonard, son of Alexander Leonard and Julia Ann Margaret Altman, on 11 Apr 1889. (Harry David Leonard was born on 11 Dec 1869 in Grapeville, Westmoreland Co., PA, died on 12 Sep 1935 in Jeannette, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania and was buried in Jeannette Memorial Cemetery, PA.)
