Catherine Engle came to the United States from the Kassel Hesse area of Germany in 1854, perhaps through the city of Baltimore, as she settled in the Cumberland, Maryland, area. Eventually, she and her five children came to the McKeesport area, leaving her husband, Christian, behind in Cumberland.
During her last years, she lived with her son, John Henry Small, in Greensburg above a store on South Main Street (near the current Thomas Florist Shop). My Grandmother Rosensteel told me stories about her. They called her Mutter - the German name for Mother. She could not speak English, only German. She wasn't a very pretty woman as her picture shows.
My Grandmother Rosensteel gave me two of her rocking chairs, one which I have refinished from a Christmas green enamel to a brown wood stain. This rocking chair is currently in my spare bedroom. The other rocking chair is still located in my cellar and badly in need of repair.
Catherine married Christian Small (Schmall). (Christian Small (Schmall) was born on 21 Mar 1827 in Germany and died on 3 Mar 1896 in Cumberland, Allegheny County, Maryland.)
