J. Michael lived in Hempfield Township, near Madison, all his life, giving his attention to farming and distilling-. Later he gave up distilling and gave his entire attention to agricultural
pursuits. In politics he was a staunch Democrat, and in religious faith a member of the Lutheran church.

Michael married Elizabeth Kunkle.
