Paul Steiner mustered in, in Pittsburgh PA, with the rank of Private in Company C, 204th Regiment, 5 Pennsylvania Heavy Artillery, on September 1, 1864. He was 5'4" tall with hazel eyes, sandy hair, and a fair complexion. Paul was a young man of 24 at this time and had previously been a farmer. He mustered out on June 30, 1865, at the end of the Civil War. On May 7, 1891, Paul applied for a disability pension from the United States Government as he claimed his illnesses had been as a result of the time spent during his service in the Civil War. He complained about asthma, shortness of breath, spitting up, a sore stomach that fills up with gas, and piles. At this time, Paul was 50 years of age. Beginning July 16, 1891, Paul Steiner was given a monthly pension of $12.
Paul married Mary Ann Bushyager, daughter of John George Bushyager Jr. and Rachel Mariah Neligh. (Mary Ann Bushyager was born on 16 Dec 1843, died on 6 Sep 1899 and was buried in Denmark Manor Cemetery Penn Twp Westmoreland Co., PA.)
