When he was a teenager he worked for his Uncle Foil Lauffer washing and parking cars in the Northwood Garage. He was raised by his maternal grandparents, Bruce and Minnie Alexander. On September 7, 1944 he wandered off and was found in Milburn, New Jersey . He then was sent to St. Barnabas Hospital in Livingstone, New Jersey for eight months. From there he was placed in the Baptist Home in Philadelphia.
Russell married Clare Marie Martha Swartz, daughter of Theodore Emmanuel Schwartz and Martha Kirchoff. (Clare Marie Martha Swartz was born on 3 Sep 1916 in 316 E. Ontario St. Philadelphia, PA and died on 13 Jan 1998 in Philadelphia, Philadelphia Co., Pennsylvania.)
