Merle S. Simpson, 69, of Uniontown, formerly of South Greensburg, died Tuesday, March 11, 1997, in Uniontown Hospital. He was born Sept. 26, 1927, in South Greensburg, a son of the late Oscar O. and Jennie Springer Simpson. Prior to his retirement, he had been employed by the Sunshine Salerno Biscuit Co. for 30 years and more recently by the Lebber Biscuit Co., both in Uniontown. He was a member of the Christ United Methodist Church in Uniontown. He was a past director and current treasurer of the Greensburg Musical Society; a past director of the Scottdale Community Band; and director of the Mt. Pleasant Firemen's Band. He was a member of the Ltd. Windjammers Band, the Malinoaros Band, the Tri-County Band and the Closer Walk Church Band. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a sister, June Saylor. He is survived by a brother, Clair O. Simpson and his wife, Alverna, of Greensburg; and a number of nieces and nephews. Friends will be received at the BARNHART FUNERAL HOME, 505 E. Pittsburgh St., Greensburg, Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Thursday from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Services will be held in the funeral home Friday at 10 a.m. with the Rev. William D. Shaw officiating. Interment will follow in the Hillview Cemetery. Should friends desire, memorials may be placed with the American Cancer Society, 152 E. Otterman St., Greensburg, Pa. 15601. Members of the Mt. Pleasant Volunteer Fire Department will meet at the funeral home Thursday at 7:30 p.m. to pay their respects.
