Russell was Captain in US Army Air Corps, 8th Air Force, WWII, February 17, 1941 to January 15, 1946. He was a radar and electronics engineer for Federal Aviation Administration 1956 until retirement in 1974. After retirement he worked for ten years as an announcer and engineer at radio broadcast stations
Howard married Florence Ione Williams, daughter of Arthur Merle Williams and Meta May Crecelius.
