Leonard served on the European front in WWII with the 36th Division of the 141st Army Infantry. He was severely wounded in the head during the Anzio Invasion which was a beachhead in Italy during the Anzio invasion for which he received the Purple Heart.
Leonard married Darleen Lucille Coulter, daughter of Fred Earl Coulter and Lucille Eleanor Dutton, on 2 Jun 1946 in Conrad, Iowa.
