Roger served in the U.S. Navy as an aircraft mechanic from 1951 to 1955; was in the Pacific aboard the aircraft carrier USS Kearsarge during the Korean Conflict. He was later employed as a lineman, and later a tester, with Northwestern Bell Telephone Company for 37 years.
Roger married Lyllis Marie Schaefer, daughter of Orville Engle Schaefer and Carrie Viola Specht.
