General Notes:
Sherman Everett was born a deaf mute. He is found in some records under the name Sherman Clark, and in other records under the name Everett Clark, and also as S.E. Clark. He worked in a brickyard and also dug wells. In the 1915 Iowa census, he is listed as deaf & mute, widowed, and earned $600 total in 1914 as a cement worker. In the 1920 census of Charles City, Iowa, he was a foundryman in a tractor factory. In his youth, Sherman enjoyed himself at a tavern in Marshalltown, Iowa. Late at night, intoxicated, he started walking home, but as he was crossing the railroad tracks, he laid down and fell asleep. A passing train severed both his legs. Over half a century later, my father, born in 1886, recalled that Sherman's replacement wooden legs would swell when it rained, and the knee joints would squeak when he walked.
Sherman married Madge Wallace on 3 Jul 1915 in Palo Alto County, Iowa. (Madge Wallace was born in 1876 in New York and died before 1915.)
Sherman next married Carrie Belle Masters, daughter of Simon Edwards Masters and Martha Jane Stainbrook, on 3 Jul 1915 in Palo Alto County, Iowa. (Carrie Belle Masters was born on 28 Jul 1870 and died on 9 Feb 1946 in Iowa.)
