Russell served his country in the Army for two years at Camp Roberts, CA; Little Rock, AR; and Fort Bliss, TX. He was discharged with honor in 1946. He later served on the Marshall County Conservation board for many years. He was a member of the Wildlife Club, Izaak Walton League, and Beef Producers 4-H Club. He had a game bird permit and raised pheasants for release in the area. After his death in 1978, his son Raymond continued the family's farming operation.
Russell married Jean Irene Fleming, daughter of John Roy Fleming and Henrietta Willis Milholland.
