In 1737 at the age of 16 William III was apprenticed for £20 to William Gould, Citizen and Goldsmith. Three years later his father took ill and William was given leave to return home. After his father's death, William returned to his master's house, and on Feb 27,1740 stole an assortment of silver buckles and escaped to the streets of London. William was captured and brought to trial. The apprentice pled guilty and was sentenced to seven years service in the American Colonies. An account of his trial from the proceedings of the Sessions of the Peace and Order and Terminer for the City of London. William Isgrigg- "William Isgrig, of St. Jobe. Zatbary, was indicted for stealing nine pair of mens silver shoe buckles valued at £5, four pair of silver knee buckles valued at 20s, three pair of women's shoe buckles valued at 20s, three plain gold rings valued at 3s, a silver snuff box with the inside gilded valued at 8s, seven silver stock buckles valued at 21s, and three pair of silver stock clasps valued at 18s.
