Dr. Paul Gideon Isaac Lauffer

LAUFFER - Dr. Paul G. I., former President of the Society of Cosmetic Chemists, died on January 4, 1999 in Newtown, Bucks County, PA. He was 98. He received the SCC Maison G. De Navarre Award in 1962 and was a Director of the Association in the 1950s and 60s. He began a seminal report in cosmetic chemistry entitled, ''New Keys to Cosmetic Chemistry.'' It served as basic instruction to young scientists entering the field of cosmetic chemistry. Dr. Lauffer was born in Farmersville, OH in 1900. He graduated from Washington and Jefferson College and received an M.S. in Chemistry, and in 1926, a Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry from Columbia University. He was Chief Chemist at Pinaud Inc. and George W. Luft Co. and Research Director for Northern Warren Corp. until its merger with Cheseborough Ponds where he was Principal Research Chemist. On retirement in 1965 he was a consultant to Merl Corp. until 1972 when he retired to Arizona where he continued to write ''New Keys'' through 1985. Dr. Lauffer was Mayor of Hastings-on-Hudson, NY from 1949 to 1950. Since 1989 he resided in Bucks County, PA with his daughter, Elizabeth Biester of Furlong, PA. He is also survived by a daughter-in-law, Patricia Lauffer, seven grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren. His first wife, Jean Robertson, predeceased him in 1959, his second wife, Doris Adams, died in 1989 and his son, John Lauffer, also predeceased him in 1986. [New York Times]
