The research on Eugene and Bertha leaves some confusion. In 1900 Eugene, Bertha and all three children are together. In 1910, Eugene was living by his self in Cleveland, listed as a salesman, and listed married. Bertha was living alone in a rented room in Clark, Springfield Ohio, working as a domestic, marital status not listed. Both daughters are married, and 13 year-old Harold J. was living with his sister Lola E.
In 1920, both Eugene and Bertha are listed as widowed, but both are still very much alive. Eugene was living with his brother Jesse D. Loffer in Stillwater, Montana, and Bertha was living with son Harold J. in Cuyohoga, Ohio. It's anyone's guess as to why they pretended that each other was deceased.
Eugene married Bertha Wolfe, daughter of William Wolfe and Phoebe Pegan.
