General Notes:
Philip was a carpenter and stone mason by trade. The work of the carpenter of this period was hewing logs with a broadax and adz, the logs being mostly oak. They also made shingles. The floors of the earlier date were split logs 2" to 3" inches thick, smoothed up with an adz. Later water power saw mills were erected and floors were made from sawed boards ripped to width, tongued and groved by hand.
Philip married Margaret Miller on 23 Oct 1838. (Margaret Miller was born on 20 Jan 1826 and died on 14 Aug 1888.)
