Levi Kemp Rosensteel Sr.

  General Notes:

Levi was named after his grandfather, Levi Kemp. From his granddaughter, Linda Soles:
"My recollections of Grandpa Rosensteel were more of curiosity than anything. He lived alone at the Rosensteel home on 525 Green Street in Southwest Greensburg when I was growing up. Most of the time, he was inebriated from excessive drinking. From time to time, we would see Grandpa Rosensteel, wearing a brown suit and brown hat, walking the streets of downtown Greensburg but never in a straight line.
My sister, Carol, and I would walk past his home on our way to school each day. Our eyes would search the outside of the house for a glimpse of the old man. However, if he was working outside, we would run to the other side of the street as we were afraid of him. For you see, we knew him, but he did not know us.
He was born to Maria Louisa Kemp and was a stepson to her husband, Isaac Rosensteel. After Maria died at the age of 38, Levi was placed in a guardianship under Uriah Kemp, his mother's brother. His uncle, Henry Kemp, and Henry's two maiden sisters, Sarah and Elizabeth Kemp, took Levi, then 14 years old, to raise him.
When Levi married, he named his first child, a daughter, Sarah Elizabeth, after these two maiden aunts. The name "Elizabeth" was then passed on to my mother, Helen Elizabeth Rosensteel Soles, Sarah Elizabeth's niece."

Levi married Flora Jane Albright, daughter of William Albright and Amanda Steiner, on 23 Jul 1891. (Flora Jane Albright was born on 24 Aug 1873, died on 31 May 1944 and was buried in Hillview Cemetery, Greensburg, Westmoreland Co., PA.)
