Isaac Rosensteel

  General Notes:

My Grandfather Rosensteel, that is Levi Jr., always told me that his Grandfather, Isaac Rosensteel, was killed by a streetcar. I thought, perhaps, if I would research a newspaper at the time of his death on February 13, 1900, it just might make the news. And it did!
The Greensburg paper had information in the article that I never expected to find. Isaac was killed by a streetcar in Pittsburgh. According to the article and following the accident, Isaac mumbled his name but bystanders could not understand him and thought he said his name was Lowenstein. He died shortly after the accident. The obituary listed his two children, Charles John and Emma Jane, but Levi was listed as his stepson!
No records were ever found showing Levi's mother, Maria Louisa Kemp, being married to any person other than Isaac Rosensteel. When Levi was four years old, he took the name Rosensteel when his Mother married Isaac.
After Maria's death at age 38, Isaac married Susan Keener, a widow with six children of her own. Prior to this marriage, Isaac had taken care of Susan and these children. However following the marriage, Susan asked Isaac to also take care of her brother and his three children. Isaac refused and they separated. Divorce papers in the Westmoreland County Court House indicated they never really lived together more than several days at a time. But it was enough time for Susan to get pregnant and bear a daughter, Edith Lilia. Isaac and Susan were married October 15, 1893 and divorced on ____________. Edith remained with her mother following the divorce.

Isaac married Maria Louisa Kemp, daughter of Levi Kemp and Mary Eicher, on 23 Dec 1873. (Maria Louisa Kemp was born on 7 Aug 1845 in Greensburg, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, died on 1 Jun 1883 in Greensburg, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania and was buried on 1 Jun 1883 in Harrold Zion Lutheran Cemetery, Hempfield Twp, Westmoreland County, PA.)

Isaac next married Susan Keener on 23 Dec 1873.
