Sylvia "Lorene" Cooper
Another name for Sylvia was Coop. General Notes: Lorene grew up in a little town in Oklahoma where everyone knew everyone and there were cousins all around. While no one had cash money, they still could have fun. Birthday parties were held 2 PM to 4 PM with no cake and no refreshments since no one could afford to feed anyone but their family. They would play games and a good time was had by all. Lorene's chores included plucking the chicken after her mother rung their necks, trimming the wicks in the oil lamps and washing the soot off the oil lamps. In 1936, the Coopers moved to California in a brand new car. Her father got a job managing a fruit orchard in the country outside of Redlands, CA. Lorene always described herself as a little country mouse compared to the Redlands girls. During WWII, she completed 240 hours of training in Aircraft manufacturing and worked in a factory. She took classes at a junior college and completed her nursing degree at California Hospital in downtown Los Angeles. She met her husband at a hospital Christmas party when she was working in Oakland, CA. When they married, both families had to adjust. Lorene's family was firmly Protestant and did not know any Catholics. Her fiancee came from a stanch Catholic family. His Irish American Catholic mother took to her bed with a weak heart when Lorene and Bud's engagement was announced. They married and maintained warm relationships with both families and saw the relatives as often as they could. Lorene worked for 40 years as a nurse and raised a family with Bud. She was known for her great sense of humor and sweetness of temperament. Lorene received her drivers license in January 1990 at 71 years of age. Sylvia married Francis Ralph Holzer, son of Frank Nickolas Holzer and Eulalia Genevieve Goggins, on 10 Sep 1948 in Newman Center, Uc Berkeley. (Francis Ralph Holzer was born on 28 Oct 1920 in Sand Springs, Montana and died on 8 Jul 2000 in Moreno Valley, Riverside Co., CA.) Marriage Notes: Coop and Bud changed their ages so that they would be the same age. Coop lowered her age by a year and Bud raised his age by a year. Mom was really 29 and Dad was really 27 but the certificate says both were 28. |
