General Notes:
Betty Jane Darr was the third youngest of nine children, (#7). She was used as a babysitter by her oldest brother to look after their daughter while they ran the store. She did not graduate from high school but went back as an adult and got her GED. She did not know how to swim so she went to the YMCA to take lessons. She never learned to swim well but she became more comfortable in the water. Betty held various jobs over her lifetime, including working in a sewing factory, selling shoes, running a switchboard. The switchboard was a Litton Industries and she had one of the first microwave ovens ever produced. While working there, she developed a kidney disease and had to go on disability. She then developed breast cancer but defeated both of these diseases. She went to volunteer at York Hospital and worked in many departments from transport to office work. She loved those days helping others. Betty always saw that we had a vacation as a family, going to Ocean Isle Beach, North Carolina, for many years. We rented a house and spent the time together with many good memories. She crocheted many afghans during her lifetime. The afghan in this photograph (photo missing) was given to Dave and Heidi the Christmas prior to their wedding.
